Understanding bereavement, grief, and loss

Funded by the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, Community Resilience Fund, Youth Out Loud! (YOL!) have created a film which introduces young people to bereavement, grief and loss, and the support available.

YOL! created the film with support from Kingston bereavement leads, along with contributions from Kingston Bereavement Support and Dr Vish Retnasingham.

The video deliberately avoids discussing bereavement topics in detail, as these may be sensitive and YOL! members working on this project felt it would be more helpful to keep this film as an introduction to bereavement. There is more detail and information available for young people on yolweb.info, such as how different faiths, beliefs, and life philosophies manage bereavement and grief within their communities.

As part of the YOL! digital youth project, YOL! members created this film with youth educator Steve Slavin. The film style uses the same format as previous films, which has young people texting about health and care issues.

YOL! engaged a Kingston youth group during the development of the film and incorporated the idea of grieving for someone who is still alive but has had a life changing diagnosis such as dementia.

Healthwatch Kingston supported YOL! to engage with 57 young people. 75% of whom did not know what bereavement meant and only 25% understood the term, which is why YOL! included the term, grief to the beginning of the film.
